Southern Miss Farmers Market to Hold State Employee Day Aug. 12

The University of Southern Mississippi will host a State Employee Day as part of the weekly Farmers Market event from 3-6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12.

The Mississippi State Department of Health, Motivating Mississippi, the State Employee Wellness Program and the Southern Miss Office of Sustainability are sponsoring the State Employee Day which will be held on the Baptist Student Union lawn. The event targets employees who work for state agencies, boards and commissions, along with those who are members of the State and School Employees’ Health Insurance Plan.

Pine Belt area farmers will be selling fresh produce and health-related vendors will be on hand to educate and encourage healthy lifestyles. Other scheduled activities include the following:

  • 3 p.m. – Cooking demonstration by ARAMARK Executive Chef Gene Rapone. Rapone, from Grove City, Pa., has more than 20 years experience from fine dining, corporate dining, country club, resorts and catering.
  • 5:30 p.m. – Julie Hall, in-house chef and cooking instruction for The Kitchen Table, will prepare a Greek salad. Originally from the Jackson area, Hall refined her skills at some of Jackson’s finer restaurants, including Nick’s and The Silver Platter.
  • 5-6 p.m. – Music and singing by Fiona Gillespie.
