The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Civic Chorale plans to take its audience to another dimension in two concerts of “Fly Me to the Moon” May 13 and 15, at two locations along the coast.

On Friday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m., “Fly Me to the Moon” will be held at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Fine Arts Auditorium on the Jefferson Davis Campus in Gulfport and on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. at the Fleming Education Center Auditorium on the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
The concert will revolve around this year’s theme “Rise Up, O Flame,” which celebrates the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the spirit of those who rose up to great heights after the tragedy through the help of community and faith.

“The fourth concert in our series this year, ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ celebrates the spirit of those that have worked so hard in rebuilding our community during the past 10 years with positive and enduring strength,” said Lauren Fowler-Calisto, artistic director for the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale.

Music performed during the concert will include Broadway and jazz standards from the 1920s through the 1970s, including “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Moonglow,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon” and “Blue Moon.”

Members of the choir will also sing several solos and duets, featuring a live jazz trio comprised of Debra Atkinson, director of choral activities at MGCCC, on piano and Southern Miss students David Pellow on bass and Vinson McMurtery on drums.
“Fly Me to the Moon” is a free concert and open to the public. Donations will also be accepted during the concert to support the ensemble.
