Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale Presents “A Choral Tradition”

Main Content

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Civic Chorale continues to celebrate the value of long-lived musical practices in its upcoming concert “Choral Traditions” March 3 and March 5.

“Our concerts this season have all circled back to the idea of tradition,” said Dr. Jonathan Kilgore, artistic director for the Gulf Coast Civic Chorale. “‘Choral Traditions’ will not only feature standard choral literature from the body of music history but will also involve a crucial tradition of music — collaboration.”

On Friday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m., Gulf Coast Civic Chorale will present “Choral Traditions” at the Fleming Education Center Auditorium on the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach and on Sunday, March 5 at 3 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in Biloxi.

As part of tradition, the chorale will share center-stage with the University’s Concert Choir on Friday and with the Southern Chorale, featuring director of choral activities and professor of music Gregory Fuller, on Sunday.

The Gulf Coast Civic Chorale and its guest performers will perform music by a variety of renowned choral composers such as Handel, Mozart, Haydn and Mendelssohn. The performance will also feature excerpts from the stories of the Messiah, Elijah and The Creation, along with the opening movement of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

“The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale is truly excited to expose our audiences with music from the greats of history,” said Kilgore. “These concerts promise to provide an outstanding choral event, and we hope the Gulf Coast community will join us for one or both.”

“Choral Traditions” is an extension of the Gulf Coast Civic Chorale’s yearlong theme “A Proud Tradition.”  The theme, “A Proud Tradition,” reflects the significance of the chorale as a family steeped in the tradition of musical excellence and pride.

In May, the theme of tradition will continue with the chorale’s next concert, “Broadway Traditions”:

  • May 12, Fine Arts Auditorium, MGCCC Jefferson Davis campus in Gulfport, 7:30 p.m.
  • May 14, Fleming Education Center Auditorium, Southern Miss Gulf Park, 3 p.m.
