Southern Miss Gulf Coast to Host Blaxploitation Lecture, “Super Fly” Film Screening

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host the lecture, “Putting 1970s 'Blaxploitation' Films in Historical Perspective,”and screen the 1972 film, Super Fly, on Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The lecture will be presented by Dr. Robert E. Weems, professor of history at the University of Missouri-Columbia and a renowned expert on African American business history and African American consumerism. Weems will discuss the historical perspective of films such as Super Fly and how they were written and filmed to appeal to the African American audience.
