Southern Miss Gulf Coast Library to Feature Woodturning Exhibit Aug. 3–Sept. 9

Main Content

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Library will feature the exhibit of Bear Point Woodworks, a display of distinctive bowls created from fallen trees during Hurricane Katrina by Frank Reed, from Aug. 3-Sept. 9. A reception honoring the artist will be held Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 12 p.m. on the first floor of the library.

Reed, a member of the International Wood Collector’s Society and Lighthouse Woodturners, is a self-taught craftsman. Distinguished guests from First Lady Laura Bush to the ambassador for the Country of Qatar have received one of Reed’s “Katrina Bowl” after visiting the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. Recently, Reed visited the island nation of St. Vincent to teach the woodturning trade to residents so they could create bowls, pens and other small items.

Bowls will be available for purchase at the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Library. For more information about the exhibit, call 228.214.3451.
