There were some tense moments at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast’s second annual College Quiz Bowl, but the university’s Accounting Society emerged victorious over the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jefferson Davis Campus Reflections Team.
The winning team, led by Dr. Dale Lunsford, included senior accounting majors Joshua Parlin of Ocean Springs, Jessica Pounds of Hattiesburg and Michael S. Rossick of Biloxi. In winning the Golden Eagle trophy, the team has secured the two-year winning streak for the university’s College of Business.
“It was very exciting for us to compete against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the final round because they were great competitors,” said Lunsford, assistant professor of management information systems. “But I hope the College of Business will continue the winning tradition next year, even though it will be a lot of pressure for the next team.”
The College Quiz Bowl featured a total of 10 teams competing for the coveted trophy. Two teams joined the competition from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and the remaining teams were comprised of Southern Miss Gulf Coast students and employees. As teams went head-to-head throughout the day, the winning team advanced to the next round until the final two teams were left to compete for the title.
“This year’s quiz bowl was a great opportunity for students and faculty at the university and community college to work together in a fun and exciting event and demonstrate their intellectual agility,” said Southern Miss Gulf Coast Academic Dean Tom Lansford, who sponsored the event.
The 2011 College Quiz Bowl Committee members were co-chairs Linda Jordan and Christy Elias, Dr. Steve Jackson, Anne Pitre, Nicole Harris and Heather LeBlanc.
