The business portfolio of Joseph F. Best III reads like an instructional manual for entrepreneurial success.
Best, chief executive officer of H&F Bread Company and president of Best Building, LLC, has amassed more than 40 years of comprehensive consulting and senior line management across a wide variety of industries including – retail, distribution, systems development, project management, and the service sector.
On Friday, April 11 the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi recognized Best’s stellar business career with its annual Boardman Entrepreneur of the Year Award during a luncheon on the Hattiesburg campus.
“I was very honored to be considered in the first place and elated when I was notified that I had been selected for this special award,” said Best, who makes his home in Atlanta, Ga.
The annual Boardman Entrepreneur of the Year Award is part of the Boardman Forum, established by Joseph Boardman of Gulfport, Miss. Nominations for the honor are presented by the Southern Miss Business Advisory Council.
Best, 64, earned his undergraduate degree in marketing and management at Southern Miss in 1971 and received his master’s degree in finance and accounting from Emory University Goizueta Business School in 1973.
Since that time Best has also served as past-president of Quality Wine and Spirits, Inc.; Atlanta Wholesale Wine; Inventor’s Universe; and Directional Software and Project Management Services, Inc. As founder, CEO and president of Quality Wine & Spirits, the company grew to more than $55 million in annual sales over a 14-year span, while earning numerous national awards and accolades.
Dr. Faye Gilbert, dean of the College of Business, said that Best’s career exemplifies the essence of entrepreneurial drive and excellence.
“The Boardman Entrepreneur of the Year Award has a long history of recognizing talented people who change the world,” said Gilbert. “The impact of the companies that Joe Best has led or improved is a perfect case in point. He has been honored for leading the fastest growing companies while building some of the best companies to work for in the nation.”
In 2010 H&F Bread Company was recognized as one of the Top 10 Bakeries in the United States by Bon Appetit. While maintaining artisan quality, H&F has grown at an annual rate of 105 percent.
When asked what qualities every successful entrepreneur possesses, Best replied: “A passion for their product or service they are selling; the ability to create a culture that employees buy into and that they value the entity above their own self-interests.”
Best, who has served on the Athletic Board at Southern Miss, is the father of two children – Joseph F. Best IV and Brittany Best.
