Golden Eagle Welcome Week, a three-day program designed to help incoming freshmen and transfer students at The University of Southern Mississippi acclimate to campus life, is set to take place Aug. 17-19.

During the program, students will participate in events that will help them identify campus resources, get connected with student organizations, and learn about Southern Miss traditions. They will also have a chance to attend their first Southern Miss pep rally and paint the Eagle Walk – a rite of passage for USM students.

“It is a chance for the new students to meet their peers while also familiarizing themselves with departments all around campus,” said Kyle Nixon, coordinator of GEWW 2014.

Welcome Week offers opportunities for students to attend academic resource fairs and learn about programs like study abroad. Additionally, students can attend sessions led by student mentors for peer-to-peer success tips.

“The desired outcome is for each student to make a connection with someone or something,” said Nixon. “We know that each student is different, and we try to provide a variety of programs so that they can find their place as they begin their college experience.”

GEWW is an annual event organized by USM’s First Year Initiative staff; it has evolved over the past decade with the intention of giving new students the tools they need to make the most of their time at Southern Miss and succeed in their careers after graduation.
