Dr. Frances Lucas, vice president and campus executive officer for The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, received an 1848, 29-star flag from Barry McIlwain, president of the Jackson County Historical and Genealogical Society (JCHGS) during a special ceremony Wednesday.

The flag draped the coffin of an unknown U.S. soldier from the Mexican-American War who died at Fort Jefferson Davis, on Greenwood Island in Jackson County. The remains were re-interred at the Biloxi National Cemetery.

Southern Miss faculty and students assisted in recovering remains and artifacts of the military graves. The flag will be displayed at the Southern Miss Katrina Research Center.
