An army of University of Southern Mississippi students will fan out in the Hattiesburg area and at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach to provide community service through “The Big Event” Saturday, April 8.

This is the seventh year USM has engaged in the program, held at colleges and universities across the country in which students take part in community service projects mutually beneficial for volunteers and recipient organizations. The initiative is supported by the USM Student Government Association (SGA), with assistance from the University’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE).

Andrew Causey, a USM sophomore from McComb, Miss. who is student director of The Big Event, said more than 700 students have signed up so far to participate from the Hattiesburg campus. “We’re really looking forward to showing how much we care about the communities we live in through our service,” Causey said.

Student volunteers will meet at Reed Green Coliseum on the Hattiesburg campus at 8 a.m. and from there depart to the service sites, which will include schools in the Hattiesburg Public School District; The Salvation Army; Lake Thoreau Environmental Center; Hub City Humane Society; Southern Pines Animal Shelter; the Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center; and the Edwards St. Fellowship Center, among others. The day’s service projects will conclude at 1 p.m.

Volunteers for The Big Event at the Southern Miss Gulf Park Campus will work in conjunction with the 2017 Blue Cross Blue Shield Get Ready to Run Kids' One -Mile Fun Run, which begins at 8 a.m. Students will provide support in a variety of areas such as course safety marshal, start line assistance, finish area assistance and general race support.

“I’m so pleased with the response from students who want to participate in this annual day of service,” said USM Associate Dean of Students Wynde Fitts. “We’re making a difference in our community every year.”
