The Southern Miss Steel Pan Orchestra, also known as SoMiSPO, will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in the Fleming Education Center auditorium at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
SoMiSPO has several different voices in the steel band instrumentation family. Their repertoire consists of traditional calypso and soca tunes, as well as popular tunes, classical, Cuban and jazz music. With their vibrant and exciting music, SoMiSPO’s performances are great for all ages.
SoMiSPO was founded in 1994 by Dr. John Wooton, professor of music and director of percussion studies at Southern Miss. The group began as a six piece ensemble and has grown to 25 members.
