The Student Government Association (SGA) at the University of Southern Mississippi is hosting The Big Event Saturday, March 23, the fourth year for the city-wide community service project.

Students involved with the Student Government Association lead the volunteer effort, working with many Hattiesburg agencies that will benefit from their services, including Thames Elementary School, Edwards Street Food Pantry, Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center and the Salvation Army.

Gerald West, SGA member, says that participation in The Big Event is the perfect opportunity to serve others. “I’m not from Hattiesburg, but it is the place I now call home,” West said. “I want to leave it better than I found it.”

“The Big Event is about us saying thank you to the community that supports us year round,” said Wynde Fitts, associate dean of students and advisor to the SGA.

The Big Event committee has added tornado relief as a new component in the wake of the natural disaster that hit our community in February. In an effort to restock food pantries in Hattiesburg, the students are accepting canned food donations on Pride Field from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. March 23. A Salvation Army truck will be present the day of the event to collect cans.

“This is an easy way for members of the Hattiesburg community to help our cause,” said Julia Bradley, director of The Big Event.

Students, faculty and staff are all invited to participate. Volunteers are asked to meet at Pride Field at 8 a.m. the day of the event to check in. Volunteers will be given community service hours through the Office of Community and Civic Engagement. SGA will also provide lunch and t-shirts to participants.
