The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra Season Finale Concert To Be Held May 5.

Internationally known Cuban violinist Ilmar Gavilan will take the stageas part of The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra’s final concert set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5 in Bennett Auditorium.

Gavilan will be performing the U.S. premiere of his father’s violin concerto. His father, Guido Gavilan, is one of the premier composers living in Cuba today and is best known for his vibrant and electrifying music.

“Ilmar Gavilan is one of the finest violinists living today, said Dr. Jay Dean, musical director of the Symphony Orchestra.  “His playing is extraordinary and the violin concerto itself was inspired by the poetry of Cuban poet Nicolas Guillen, who is known for writing musical and rhythmic sounds into his poetry.”

The name of the concerto, “On the Sea of the Caribbean Travels the Violin”reflects the title and contains many beautiful sounds and powerful Cuban rhythms.

“The audience will love this very virtuosic and exciting piece,” said Dean.

The Hattiesburg Choral Union, led by Dr. Gregory Fuller, director of Choral Activities at Southern Miss, will balance out the rest of the program with the peaceful sonorities of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem.”

Performing choral-orchestral masterworks from the High Baroque to newly composed commissioned works, the Hattiesburg Choral Union includes ensembles from Southern Miss and the community, including the Meistersingers of Hattiesburg.

Gavilan is currently the concertmaster of the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. and performs with the New Jersey Symphony and the Harlem Quartet. Additionally, he teaches violin at the Juilliard School, Music Advancement Program, Pre-College Division.
