Several University of Southern Mississippi campus entities have united in a special fundraising effort for victims of the deadly earthquake/tsunami that struck Japan last month.

During the month of April a series of fundraising activities will be held on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus under the banner “Project Japan.”

“This initiative is so important because it brings academic departments, offices within the Division of Student Affairs and student organizations together to raise money and awareness of the devastation in Japan,” said Audrey Charoglu, interim associate director for Unions and Programs. “The naming of the project and events conceived were mostly the product of our students. They truly have a passion for wanting to give back to Japan.”

From April 4-14 students will be set up at Shoemaker Square on campus selling T-shirts and accepting donations to the relief efforts. On April 13, “Jam for Japan” will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Freshman Quad, featuring a DJ, dunking booth and the Southern Miss version of “I Survived a Japanese Game Show.” On April 14 donations will be accepted at the University Club meeting (for faculty and staff only) from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Power House restaurant on campus.

On April 26 students will be on hand to collect donations at the Golden Eagles’ home baseball game against South Alabama. Tickets will also be sold at that time for a chance to win a Southern Miss gift basket.

Since 1989 Southern Miss has enjoyed a relationship with Kaetsu University based in Tokyo, Japan. When Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast in 2005, damaging Southern Miss campuses in Long Beach and Hattiesburg, Kaetsu University donated $5,000 to the restoration efforts.

Southern Miss groups collaborating on “Project Japan” include the Business Student Advisory Council, College of Business, Dr. Bret Becton’s leadership class, English Language Institute, French Association, Eagle Dining, Office of Community Service Learning, Office of Student Activities, Residence Life, Southern Miss Activities Council and the University Club.

Donations can be sent to the Office of Student Activities, 118 College Drive #5048, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. Make checks payable to University of Southern Mississippi (with “Project Japan” in the memo portion. For more information call 601.266.4403.
