For Dr. Faye Gilbert, serving as president of the Southern Business Administration Association (SBAA) means honoring a commitment to provide students with the most rewarding college experience possible.

Gilbert, dean of the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi, has spent the first half of 2015 as the SBAA president after serving as vice president of Programs last year and as secretary/treasurer in 2012-13. She is the first Southern Miss dean to occupy the president’s chair since Dean Emeritus Dr. Joseph Greene held the office in 1967-68.

“It is quite an honor to be elected as an officer of this outstanding group,” said Gilbert, who became dean of the USM College of Business in July, 2013. “The members share best practices and are very open about the leadership challenges you encounter in this position. We are all very committed to improving the experience for students and to ensuring that what we do is relevant for the needs of organizations today.”

The Southern Business Administration Association is the regional association of collegiate business programs offered by colleges and universities in the southern United States. In addition to the south, members are located in the northeast, the mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, the west, and Canada.

The mission of SBAA is to improve management education by providing networking opportunities for business educators, showcasing best practices, promoting innovation in teaching and scholarship, and encouraging leadership in the management of educational programs.

Following her one-year tenure as president, Gilbert will become immediate past president. She points out that the proven track record of leadership within the Southern Miss College of Business has not gone unnoticed in the regional community.

“Dr. Greene was one of the first officers of this organization in 1964 and Southern Miss was a founding member,” said Gilbert. “It is important to me that I continue the legacy of leadership that Southern Miss is known to provide to the southern region. This service keeps me current about best practices in our field and enables me to bring topics for consideration back to our faculty and department chairs.”

Gilbert will preside over the organization’s annual conference, set for November, in New Orleans.
