USM Department of Psychology Hosting “Out of the Darkness Walk” April 28

Main Content

Members of The University of Southern Mississippi community and area residents will bring awareness to suicide prevention when the USM Department of Psychology hosts the “Out of the Darkness Walk” on the Hattiesburg campus. The event, set for April 28 from 8:30 – 11 a.m. at the Bruce and Virginia Wilgus Fitness Trail, located next to the Payne Center on the Hattiesburg campus, is being held in support of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s efforts to save lives and give hope to those affected by suicide.

Every day approximately 121 Americans die by suicide. These walks, held across the country, are a way to memorialize those lost to suicide, reduce stigma and raise funds for research and public education. Students, faculty, and staff members are encouraged to participate as an individual walker or as an organization. Scheduled guest speakers for the opening of the event include Sitaniel Wimbley, a USM alumnus who is education director for the Mississippi National Alliance on Mental Illness; and Dr. Michael Anestis, the 2018 American Association of Suicidology Schneidman Award Winner and a faculty member in the USM Department of Psychology.
