USM Graduate Program in Counseling Psychology Earns Accreditation from MPCAC

Main Content

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Master of Science in Counseling Psychology program has earned a 10-year accreditation designation from the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC).

MPCAC accreditation comes after a rigorous process involving a detailed self-study by the institution, a site visit by professionals in the field, and a detailed report that includes recommendations and stipulations for accreditation. MPCAC accreditation provides an added value to academic programs, state licensure boards and the public through clearly defined standards and related professional competencies.

Academic programs seeking MPCAC accreditation benefit from the peer review process, feedback and consultation obtained through this accreditation process, said Dr. Emily Yowell, director of training for the program and an associate professor of psychology.

“A full 10- year MPCAC accreditation is a testament to the quality and rigor of our program,” said Dr. Yowell. “It is an honor to join the list of other highly regarded MPCAC-accredited programs.”

According to Yowell, the USM program has a record of successfully preparing its graduates for further doctoral training and work as professional counselors through unique training in the integration of science and practice, with all students engaging in active research teams, and many of them publishing and presenting in the field. Students in the program receive faculty supervised clinical training in the department’s in-house clinic, where they see community and university clients.

Recent graduates work in a variety of settings, serving the mental health needs of children and adults locally through Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources and Pine Grove Behavioral Health & Addiction Services, as well as in facilities throughout the state of Mississippi and country.
