The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Mass Communication and Journalism will host brand strategist Mart Martin of Jackson Spalding, one of Atlanta’s largest and most respected marketing communications agencies, on Tuesday, March 21 from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. at the Polymer Science Building, room 101 on the Hattiesburg campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Martin, a 1978 USM advertising and marketing honors alumnus, will lead a discussion on brand strategy titled “Building a Strong Brand Foundation: How Just the Right Words Can Set your Brand Apart.”
As a brand strategist, Martin helps companies, organizations and brands gain identity clarity and better understand who they are, what they do and why it matters using a process he developed called a JS Excavation®. Through this process, he uncovers information, insights and ideas that inform the creation of mission statements, core values, brand positioning statements, key messages, brand names, taglines and creative concepts.
Before joining Jackson Spalding in 2006, Martin spent 20 years with The Coca-Cola Company as its director of public relations and publicity. Prior to Coca-Cola, he was director of media and public relations for the 1985 United States Olympic Festival and the 1983 Special Olympics World Summer Games, both held in Baton Rouge, La. He also held positions with Heritage Publishing Company in Little Rock and Mississippi Special Olympics.
Dr. Vanessa Murphree, associate professor in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism, said it’s a special honor to host Martin, a member of the MCJ Hall of Fame. “He has been one of our most supportive alumni for many years,” Murphree said. “We’re thrilled to have him return to campus and share his wisdom with our students.”
