USM Office of Sustainability Hosting Earth Week Activities

The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Sustainability is hosting a series of events associated with Earth Week 2018, April 16th - April 21st on the Hattiesburg campus. 

Throughout the week, organizations on and off campus will participate and promote environmental awareness and concerns as well as share ideas on best practices for a sustainable future. These events are open to all members of the university and Hattiesburg communities, and we hope that everyone will join us in celebrating the beautiful planet we call home.

The Earth Week lineup includes:

Monday, April 16

  • Trees for the Earth Lecture; 12 p.m.-1 p.m., lawn area south-east of Marsh Hall for a presentation on the connection of trees to the Earth. The speaker will be Dr. Malcolm Guidry, a renowned certified arborist with more than 32 years of experience preserving Live oaks. A drawing for five potted tree seedlings will be held at the end of the lecture.
  • Earth Poetry Night; 8 p.m.-10 p.m., T-Bones Cafe in Hattiesburg is the site for a night of environmentally-themed poetry, great food, and coffee. This event is free and open to everyone.  Walk-in participants are welcome, but pre-registration is encouraged. Tuesday, April 17

  • Trashion Fashion Show; 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., at the Intermezzo Plaza. Current USM students, individually or as a group, are invited to create an outfit made of recyclable material to compete for a $100 gift card. Wednesday, April 18

  • Earth Fair; 10 a.m. -1 p.m., at Shoemaker Square where many organizations from campus and the surrounding community will be sharing their environmental messages.

Thursday, April 19

  • Hattiesburg Earth Fair; 3 p.m.- 6 p.m. Town Square Park. The City of Hattiesburg will be hosting an Earth Fair in conjunction with the downtown farmers' market. There will be booths representing local organizations, as well as live music, fresh local food, and door prizes.

Friday, April 20

Saturday, April 21

  • Right Way to Throw Away Day; 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.The City of Hattiesburg and many other local and regional entities are sponsoring a free collection of household hazardous material. The event will be held at two locations, Bobby L. Chain Airport and the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center. This is a great opportunity to properly dispose of items like paint, lawn chemicals, household cleaners, etc. Electronics are also accepted.
