Dr. Michael Madson

A University of Southern Mississippi faculty member has received a prestigious recognition from his graduate school alma mater.

Dr. Michael Madson, professor of counseling psychology and director of undergraduate studies in the Southern Miss Department of Psychology, was named recipient of the Marquette (Wisc.) University National Award Recipient with an achievement award from its College of Education’s Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology program. He is a previous recipient of the college’s Young Alumnus of the Year Award.

Madson joined the USM faculty in 2005, and his research includes examination of college student substance use, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing. He also directs the department’s Behavior and Alcohol Research Laboratory and its Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) program. Along with colleague Dr. Bonnie Nicholson, he formed the department’s Psychology Scholars Program in January 2017 to foster undergraduate achievement, as well as participation and diversity in graduate education.

In a letter from Marquette University informing him of his selection for the honor, Madson was praised as having “built an impressive career as a teacher and scholar, which contributes greatly to excellence in higher education.” Madson will be presented the award in April at Marquette’s National Awards Weekend in Milwaukee.

“The accomplishments acknowledged in being chosen for this award really reflect my great colleagues in the Counseling Psychology Program, the Department of Psychology, my research collaborators, and the many graduate and undergraduate students I’ve worked with in my time at USM,” Madson said. “I’m very grateful for having all of them in my academic world.”
