For the second consecutive year The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has been designated a “Gold Status” Military Friendly School by Victory Media for 2018-2019.

The Victory Media Military Friendly® Schools survey is the longest-running, most comprehensive review of college and university investments in serving military and veteran students.

The designation recognizes USM for its continued extraordinary commitment in caring for and providing engaged assistance to support military veterans, service members and their families. Over the last four years Victory Media has designated USM as a Military Friendly institution.

“We are grateful for ‘Gold Status’ Military Friendly recognition and eager to do more on behalf of our student-veterans, and military students,” said Maj. Gen. (U.S. Army ret.) Jeff Hammond, who serves as director of USM’s Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families. “Our University leads the way across the State of Mississippi in developing accessible programs to meet the needs and interests of student-veterans who have been self-sacrificing in their service to our nation. We look forward in continuing to make a difference in the lives of those who served for our freedom.”

Founded in the Fall Semester of 2014, the USM Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families (located on the Hattiesburg campus at 3503 Morningside Dr.) serves as a central point for military students regarding information, academic and social services to include direct connection with the Department of Veteran Affairs. The center also serves as a conveniently located campus site for Student-Veterans and others to gather, study, socialize and share individual, and group experiences.

USM military student and Mississippi Army National Guard member Sarah Stroud of Sandy Hook, Miss., strongly believes the “military friendly” support provided by the campus Veterans Center has significantly contributed to her academic success and overall college experience.

“I am proud to be a part of such a caring organization where our number one goal is to support and assist our veterans, service members and their families in any way possible,” said Stroud.

The Military Friendly® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions.

Military Friendly® is the standard that measures an organization’s commitment, effort and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefit for the military community.

As a designated “Military Order of the Purple Heart” institution, USM is nationally recognized as one of the nation’s top military friendly institutions and maintains designation in other prestigious publications, including Military Times 2018 “Best for Vets” (ranked No.17 in the Nation) and Military Advanced Education “Top School” for 2018.  Additionally, USM has been rated as one of the Best Military Friendly Online Colleges across the United States.

The USM Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families is open to all guests and visitors. For more information call 601-264-4629 or online at: https://www.usm.edu/military-veterans
