Main Content

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families has added a significant new resource with the placement of a vocational rehabilitation counselor through the Department of Veterans Administration (VA).

Steven Welch joins the USM center as part of the VA’s “VetSuccess on Campus” program. USM is one of 94 universities/colleges across the nation to be included in this prestigious program and Mississippi’s only designee.

The new VA counselor will provide a “one-stop liaison” for all student-veterans in the South Mississippi region. The program aims to help student-veterans and their qualified dependents succeed and thrive through a coordinated delivery of on-campus benefits assistance and counseling leading to completion of their education, and preparing them to enter the labor market in viable careers.

“We are excited to have been selected as a ‘VetSuccess On Campus’ university and look forward to expanding efforts to support and sustain military veterans, service members, and their families,” said Maj. Gen. (U.S. Army ret.) Jeff Hammond, who serves as the USM center director. “We eagerly look forward to supporting a wonderful VA program designed to assist not only USM student-veterans and their families, but all our military students attending a South Mississippi community college as well as William Carey University.”

South Mississippi “VetSuccess on Campus” counselor will provide assistance with:

  • Information on VA educational benefits
  • Vocational exploration, selecting a suitable major, and career counseling services
  • Accessing, understanding and applying for VA benefits to include vocational rehabilitation and employment, disability compensation, life insurance, home loan guaranty and other benefits and services
  • Assistance with electing healthcare benefits through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA)
  • Obtaining referrals for medical and mental health care
  • Readjustment counseling services
  • Find job placement assistance and coordinate with local veterans’ employment representatives and disabled veterans’ outreach programs
  • Referrals to on-campus, community and VA resources to ensure academic success
  • Transition support services
