University of Southern Mississippi Vice President for Finance and Administration Dr. Douglas Vinzant has announced the hiring of Krystyna Varnado as Associate Vice President for Human Resources. Varnado will be responsible for all aspects of human resources and serve as the University’s chief human resources officer.
She will begin work on Dec. 1, pending the approval of the Board of Trustees of Mississippi’s State Institutions of Higher Learning.
As one of Mississippi’s leading employment generators and economic catalysts, the University directly employs more than 4,000 individuals.
“Ms. Varnado is a seasoned human resource management professional,” Vinzant said. “I am confident that she possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to help us advance the University’s initiatives related to our wide array of human resource management requirements.”
Varnado is currently employed by the Mississippi Power Company. Prior to her work at Mississippi Power, she was the head of human resources at the Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport. Her prior experience also includes human resource positions with the Ochsner Health System and with the Winn-Dixie corporation.
In addition to possessing both of the professional certifications offered by the Society for Human Resource Management, she holds a Master of Business Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from The University of Southern Mississippi.
“USM played an instrumental role in launching my Human Resources career and to return 20 years later to head the HR function is a dream come true,” Varnado said. “I couldn’t be more proud or excited to be coming home and look forward to the incredible things we’re going to do together.”
