As part of an ongoing commitment to student engagement and success, The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business will host a multi-faceted Executives On: Lecture Series over the next three months at the University’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Challenged to develop a plan for combatting obesity and health issues in Mississippi, a team of students from The University of Southern Mississippi devised a strategy that propelled them to victory in the second annual Social Business Challenge competition held earlier this month in Jackson.

Financial experts expressed cautious optimism about the U.S. economy for 2016 during the annual Economic Outlook forum held Thursday, Feb. 11 at the Thad Cochran Center on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

Deeming it a “win-win situation,” University of Southern Mississippi business Professor Bret Becton applauded the Cintas Corp. for conducting its annual management trainee summit at the University’s College of Business on the Hattiesburg campus.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi will join with students from Mississippi Public Universities to tackle one of Mississippi’s most pressing problems: Obesity and related health issues. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi will serve as the title sponsor for the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Social Business Challenge, giving students from Mississippi Public Universities the opportunity to showcase their ideas, creativity and ingenuity as they present ideas for businesses focused on reducing obesity and related health issues rather than making a profit.

Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Glenn Boyce announced today the launch of the Mississippi Business Engagement Network, an initiative to connect business and industry to the wealth of university assets housed within Mississippi Public Universities. The initiative has a website, http://msben.com, to facilitate these connections.

Seven international business students from The University of Southern Mississippi enjoyed a memorable experience on the evening of Monday, Jan. 11 as dinner guests at the residence of the Consulate General of France in New Orleans.

 

 

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Hattiesburg will join forces with the Gulf Coast center to conduct a series of Business 101 workshops in January, 2016.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business co-sponsored the Minority Women Entrepreneurs’ Forum on December 1, 2015 at the Island View Casino Beach Tower in Gulfport, Miss.

University of Southern Mississippi business students captured four out of eight awards presented at the Mississippi Cotton Merchandising Competition held Nov. 20 at Mississippi State University in Starkville. While 45 merchandising plans were entered in the completion, only 17 were chosen for the final competition at Mississippi State University. 

The Southern Entrepreneurship Program (SEP), a statewide outreach program of The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business and Center for Economic and Entrepreneurship Education, kicked off its 9th annual program series on Nov. 4 in Jackson, Miss.

Duane Lock took the skills he learned more than 30 years ago as a business student at The University of Southern Mississippi and parlayed them into a successful career in the energy sector.

 

On Thursday, Nov. 12, the Southern Miss College of Business honored Lock with its Alumnus of the Year Award during a banquet held at Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus. The award is sponsored by Joseph F. Boardman.

University of Southern Mississippi Professor Cyndi Huff Gaudet employs a simple, yet inspiring, mantra to guide her efforts as chair of the Department of Human Capital Development – “Work Hard, Have Fun, and Make a Difference.”

 

Her commitment to that theme paved the way for Gaudet to receive the 2015 Karen Sock Woman of the Year Award, presented last weekend at the Success Women’s Conference in Biloxi.

The University of Southern Mississippi student chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA) will conduct a “CFO (Chief Financial Officer) Symposium on Wednesday, Oct. 28 in the McDonnell Auditorium of Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus. The roundtable discussion, set for 7-9 p.m., is free and open to the general public.  

The College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus will launch a new “Lunch and Learn” series from 12:15-1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 in Room 104 of the Fleming Education Center.

Moving business programs forward on the Mississippi Gulf Coast served as the theme for the day as The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus College of Business held its first Business Advisory Board meeting last month in Long Beach.

The University of Southern Mississippi announced two new initiatives on Wednesday, Oct. 7 designed to expand and enrich its commitment to student success. The Barnes & Noble Textbook Scholarship and the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan were celebrated during a special ceremony held on the Hattiesburg campus.

 

Bookstore giant Barnes & Noble created the need-based textbook scholarship fund for Southern Miss students. Over the next four years, the University will distribute approximately $375,000 in textbook scholarships (maximum of $500 per student per year) to students with financial need.

The initial stages of a construction project that will transform The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach has begun with demolition of the former Holloway Complex.

The University of Southern Mississippi Merchandising Program will host the Cotton Coterie and Up-Cycling Design Competition on Friday, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus. More than 120 merchandising students across state of Mississippi will participate in the event.

The University of Southern Mississippi has earned a No. 15 ranking by Sports Management Degree Guide in its listing of the “50 Most Affordable Urban Schools for Sports Management in 2015.”
