College of Business students in sport marketing at The University of Southern Mississippi were treated to a presentation recently by Miranda Black, Director of Tickets and Communications for the Mississippi Braves baseball organization.

The University of Southern Mississippi is partnering with three other major universities on a unique initiative designed to benefit mid-level to senior level economic development practitioners.

A packed audience on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus heard Mars Wrigley Co. executive Edward Taylor extol the virtues of education and core values as part of the Inspired Leaders Series sponsored by the University’s College of Business.

College of Business students at The University of Southern Mississippi received special training in safety and security measures during a visit by Landmark Event Services. The students were trained in various security measures such as fire safety, crowd control, and bag check and were also taken through an official screening process for new workers.

The College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi has partnered with clothing retailers Talbots and Jos. A. Bank on a new initiative called the Eagle Suit Fund. The fund is sponsored by a generous alumnus of the University.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Hattiesburg will join forces with the Gulf Coast center to conduct a series of Business 101 workshops in September.

Dr. Chad Miller, associate professor in the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Sport Management at The University of Southern Mississippi, served as a featured speaker for an International Economic Development Council webinar held recently.

The College of Business chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) at The University of Southern Mississippi inducted 48 students and one faculty member this spring. Beta Gamma Sigma is a business honorary that recognizes academic excellence in business studies only at schools that are AACSB accredited (Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business).

For the 10th consecutive year students majoring in international business at The University of Southern Mississippi conducted research and presented senior capstone projects critical to the export of Mississippi goods and services around the world.

The Southern Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) at The University of Southern Mississippi concluded its series of educational high school events and competitions on Wednesday, May 3, by hosting the 10th Annual SEP State Business Plan Competition at the Trent Lott National Center.

We’ve all seen or heard the conventional rap on collegiate student-athletes: preferential treatment while taking the easiest courses offered. At The University of Southern Mississippi, that long-held stereotype has been expelled.

 

Enter Cameron Tom, Picasso Nelson Jr., Parker Adamson, Brittany Taylor, and Randall Dias II – scholarship student-athletes who are making distinct marks in the highly demanding banking and finance program. With just two weeks remaining in the 2017 spring semester, this group owns five of the 10-highest GPA’s among banking and finance seniors.

The College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi honored students and faculty during its annual Awards Ceremony held Friday, April 21 in the Scianna Hall McDonnell Auditorium. A reception followed the ceremony. Southern Farm Bureau Insurance sponsored the event.

Several University of Southern Mississippi business students walked away with awards during the Mississippi Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference held recently in Columbus, Miss.

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Business honored one of its own on Friday, April 7 as mortgage industry expert Dr. Bill Rayburn received the 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year award.

 

Rayburn, a 1981 Southern Miss Business Administration graduate, became the co-founder of FNC, Inc., a financial technology company that focused on scoring appraisals for the mortgage industry. Rayburn and his partners sold FNC,Inc. in 2016 and started mTrade.com.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Master of Science in Economic Development program will offer a new online elective course, ED 761 - Contemporary Issues in Economic Development Economic Development for Defense Communities, from June 5-July 31 in the 2017 summer semester. 

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Business recently announced that students Josh Spivey and Marshall Acklin have been chosen to join the EAGLE Scholar Program for the 2017-18 year.

Mortgage industry expert Dr. Bill Rayburn will be honored by The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business as its 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year during a special luncheon set for Friday, April 7. The luncheon will be held at the Trent Lott Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

University of Southern Mississippi business students Justin McCool and Morgan Musgrove have been selected for the 2017 Eli Lilly and Company Sales Internship – a 10-week training program with the global pharmaceutical company.

 

McCool and Musgrove, both Healthcare Marketing majors, competed against students from other schools to earn the training opportunity. There were only 60 internships awarded across the country for Eli Lilly’s program.

Russ Willis, a management and human resources professor of practice at The University of Southern Mississippi, spent his spring break as a guest lecturer at Keele University, located just outside Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England.

Senior banking and finance major Zachary Irons has extended an impressive streak for The University of Southern Mississippi by capturing the prestigious 2017 Orrin W. Swayze Scholarship.
