University of Southern Mississippi alumna Jamie Thompson was recently recognized for her participation in NASA’s DEVELOP program at the John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Miss.

University of Southern Mississippi student and Gulfport native Jamie Henton has faced many obstacles throughout her college career, but letting those obstacles hinder her from furthering her education has never been an option.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Civic Chorale plans to take its audience to another dimension in two concerts of “Fly Me to the Moon” May 13 and 15, at two locations along the coast.

University of Southern Mississippi Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven R. Moser has announced the appointment of Dr. Casey Malone Maugh Funderburk as Associate Provost for the Gulf Park Campus, effective May 10.  Maugh Funderburk’s appointment is pending IHL Board approval.

The University of Southern Mississippi celebrated the completion of its newly constructed Gulf Park campus gateway entrance for the state’s only beachfront campus during a special ceremony held today (Friday, April 29) in Long Beach.

 

Many from the University and neighboring communities gathered to hear Southern Miss President Rodney D. Bennett, Vice President for the Gulf Park Campus Steve Miller, Long Beach Mayor Billy Skellie and Gulf Park Student Government Association President McKenzie Irish speak on how the gateway entrance serves as another advancement to the Gulf Park campus.

A longtime dream has become a tingling reality for University of Southern Mississippi senior Jansen Owen, who will enter the Tulane University Law School in August.

Five students from the School of Computing at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus recently competed in a “Hackathon” April 8 in Mobile, Ala.

 

Hosted by Rural Sourcing, Inc. (RSI), the second annual Mobile Hackathon – also known as a hack-day, hackfest or codefest – is an event in which computer programmers, and others in the field of software development, collaborate intensively on a software-related project for a set amount of time.

The Gulf Coast Center for Child Development (GCCCD), a dual-purpose early childhood education and care center of The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus, will be visited by Wild at Heart Rescue, a local wildlife rescue group based out of Vancleave, Miss.

A partnership between The University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, has enabled MGCCC students to enroll into a program that will guide them from the community college to a bachelor’s degree in the entertainment industry with an emphasis in film.

University of Southern Mississippi graduate students Jeremy Johnson and Grover Brown are following in a lengthy line of successful scholarship winners at the University as recipients of 2016 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships.

 

The fellowships cover three years of funding. Students receive a $34,000 stipend every year as well as a $12,000 cost of attendance allowance tenable at any university in the country. NSF Graduate Research Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic merit as well as their potential for broader impact on the greater scientific community and society as a whole.

The Institute for Disability Studies on The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus, in conjunction with Junior Civitan, will be co-hosting Amputee Awareness Day on Saturday, April 23.

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Marine Science (DMS) has announced its annual Wiesenburg lecturer as Dr. John Hughes Clarke, a professor with a joint appointment in mechanical engineering and Earth sciences at the University of New Hampshire.

 

The public is invited to enjoy a free lecture by Clarke titled “What Drives Deep Sea Channel Systems” at 11 a.m. April 20 in the StennisSphere Auditorium at the John C. Stennis Space Center.

Instead, he is what others may consider an over-achiever, or a man of many talents, and these traits have led to Naghshpour being named The University of Southern Mississippi’s 2016 Mentor of the Year and the 2016 Research Fellow for the Academy of Economics and Finance.
