The University of Southern Mississippi is on its way to transforming the quality of health care provided to students, faculty and staff -- thus a longtime vision of Student Health Services Director Dr. Virginia Moffitt Crawford and her family will soon become a reality.

 

On Thursday, March 7, the USM Foundation announced the Moffitt Health Center Campaign, which will aid in the relocation of the University’s Student Health Services to a new, state-of-the-art facility. The $1 million campaign has already received $750,000 in commitments toward the center.

Mississippi’s First Lady Deborah Bryant conducted an interactive tour of The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi on Thursday, Feb. 28.

Dr. Margot Hall, a professor in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at The University of Southern Mississippi, received the Dudley Peeler Award during the Mississippi Academy of Sciences meeting held Feb. 21-22 on the Southern Miss campus. The Student Dietetic Association within the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems at The University of Southern Mississippi sponsored an “Eat Well Hattiesburg” Nutrition and Fitness Fair on Feb. 23 at Pride Field on the Hattiesburg campus.

The event was designed to introduce the Hattiesburg community to vendors that provide healthy nutrition and food options in the Pine Belt. The student group also sought to supply a venue for all ages to come enjoy themselves and learn about nutrition and fitness.

The College of Health at The University of Southern Mississippi has partnered with Hattiesburg Clinic to present the 2013 Spring Forum Series titled: “Mississippi’s Health, Mississippi’s Future.”

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Lady Eagles basketball team has taken a shine to one of the brightest lights on the University’s campus, and the feeling is mutual.

Members of The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team spent several hours answering questions and mingling with students at the DuBard School for Language Disorders on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Donate Life Mississippi honored The University of Southern Mississippi, its fans, alumni and students with a special presentation as winners of the inaugural Donor Challenge for 2012.

Jamie Powell, an alumnus of the Southern Miss School of Human Performance and Recreation, has achieved great success on and off the softball field since his days as an outstanding academic at the University.

Powell is a Marion County native and graduated cum laude in 2005 with a dual degree in coaching administration and school health licensure. Powell was also awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Dual Major Scholar Award from his department while at Southern Miss.

The Department of Nutrition and Food Systems at The University of Southern Mississippi recently hosted a group of students from St. Norbert College in Green Bay, Wisconsin as part of a service outreach program.

Thanks to the generosity of Lights Jewelers and Gemologists, The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi is holding “A Sweetheart of a Raffle.” The Grand Prize is an antique-inspired, 18-karat white gold and diamond pendant, valued at $1,950.

The Mississippi Autism Advisory Committee (MAAC) will host a public hearing on current issues in Mississippi for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and invites everyone affected by or interested in Autism to attend the hearing.

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security at The University of Southern Mississippi will offer an online Sports Security Management Professional Certificate beginning Feb. 4 through April 15.

The Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach at The University of Southern Mississippi will host the Second Annual Safe Schools and Communities: Building Resistance and Resiliency to Violence, Defiant Groups and Bullying Symposium on Feb. 8 at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Micky Harrington, an alumnus of The University of Southern Mississippi, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the 28th Southern Miss Coca-Cola Classic Rodeo, set for Feb. 15-16 at the James Lynn Cartlidge Forrest County Multi Purpose Center on U.S. 49 South in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi will now be able to serve more students in its outclient therapy program thanks to a gift from the Walmart Foundation and the Mississippi Advisory Council through the State Giving Program, totaling $34,000.

Youngsters at The Children’s Center for Communication and Development wasted no time delving into the large stack of books donated by the Library and Information Science Student Association at The University of Southern Mississippi on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Dr. Richard W. Meiring, assistant dean for Admissions and Student Affairs at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University recently visited The University of Southern Mississippi campus to speak with healthcare preprofessional students interested in veterinary medicine.

The University of Southern Mississippi chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) Health Preprofessional Honor Society recently hosted a week-long book sale featuring the MedTutor program.

The School of Social Work at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted its annual Social Work Colloquium on Friday, Nov. 16 in the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus. This year’s event titled, “New Directions in Trauma Treatment: Implications for Social Work Policy and Practice,” featured a number of regionally and nationally-known speakers.

 “Sports Nutrition: Playing a Winning Game” served as the topic of the 3rd Annual Department of Nutrition and Food Systems Seminar held earlier this month at The University of Southern Mississippi. 

More than 80 students, faculty and community members attended the annual seminar which featured elements of nutrition as it relates to various professions and current topics. This year’s seminar featured three sports dietitians -- Jamie Mascari, Rebecca Turner and Tavis Piattoly.

University of Southern Mississippi Professor Amal Mitra is a particularly proud father these days after watching his daughter, Paromita Mitra, capture the Miss Mississippi USA crown on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Harrah’s Event Center in Tunica, Miss.

The Provost’s Office is asking Southern Miss students and faculty to assist in the Fall 2012 Textbook Survey that is now available on SOAR. Faculty and students will find separate surveys, which must be completed before midnight on Friday, Nov. 16 to be included in the final results.
