The School of Speech and Hearing Sciences' Doctor of Audiology program at The University of Southern Mississippi presented white coats to five students during its annual ceremony held April 27th in the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Master’s in Nursing program made a significant leap in Best Graduate Schools rankings for 2020 by U.S. News & World Report. The USM program climbed from No. 136 in the 2019 rankings to a new position of No. 111.

Dr. Rebecca Newton, assistant professor in the School of Professional Nursing Practice at The University of Southern Mississippi, won the Mississippi Nursing Association Faculty Member of the Year Award at the 14th annual Nightingale Awards Gala held earlier this month in Jackson, Miss.

Seven years after its inception, the Nurse Anesthesia Program at The University of Southern Mississippi has grown into one of the institution’s premier professional healthcare training regimens.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s first-of-its-kind fully online Nursing Leadership Ph.D. program has extended the application for fall 2019 admission to March 1. The program, which is designed to bring nurses into leadership roles, offers students a unique way to complete their Ph.D. from the comforts of their home.

Students, faculty and staff within The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing and Health Professions donned red on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in support of American Heart Month and the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative.

U.S. News & World Report has recognized a group of online programs at The University of Southern Mississippi among the nation’s best in the publication’s 2019 Best Online Rankings.

 

In its rankings announced earlier this week, U.S. News rated USM’s online graduate nursing program at No. 59; the undergraduate bachelor’s degree program at No. 93 and the Master of Business Administration program at No. 119. The list includes more than 350 colleges and universities.

University of Southern Mississippi nursing student Tamecia Herbert has been awarded The Hiawatha and Eunice Northington Memorial Scholarship.

 

Herbert, a native of Crystal Springs, Miss., currently works at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery V.A. Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., as a registered nurse. The scholarship is administered through the Mississippi Nurses Foundation.

Barely two years old, an innovative faculty development initiative at The University of Southern Mississippi has blossomed into a resounding success.

 

USM’s ACUE (Association of College and University Educators) Faculty Development Institute is an intensive, 10-week program featuring participants engaged in a subset of ACUE’s Course in Effective Teaching Practices, which focuses on research-based techniques for promoting active learning, improving assessment techniques, and designing effective courses.

Rebecca Newton, assistant professor in the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been chosen to participate in the inaugural AACN-Apple Digital Innovation Bootcamp: From Content to Action, set for July 9-12 in Austin, Texas. Newton is one of 30 nursing faculty from across the nation – and the only educator from Mississippi -- selected for the bootcamp.

“Harvey” isn’t much of a talker, but as the newest patient simulator in The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing Clinical Simulation Lab, his contributions to educating the next generation of nurses will speak volumes.

“The Next Generation Harvey®” is one of three patient simulators purchased by the College of Nursing with the support of a generous donation from Southern Miss benefactors Chuck and Rita Scianna.

Two University of Southern Mississippi students recently were awarded study abroad grants worth $1,000 each from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi — the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. The students are part of a select group of 50 students nationwide to receive the award.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s new online RN to BSN program has a limited number of scholarships available for the Spring 2018 semester. The scholarships are for Registered Nurses (RN) admitted to the RN to BSN program and starting the program during the spring 2018 semester.

For increased quality care, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) says one way to secure our state and nation’s health care is by increasing the number of nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

Nurses from across the globe will convene on Oct. 20-21 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus for the annual King International Nursing Conference. The event will be held at Asbury Hall, home to USM’s College of Nursing.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s online Master’s degree program in nursing has been ranked among the nation’s best in two distinguished categories by research publisher SR Education Group.

Destiney Morgan, a student in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded the Eileen S. & Earl C. Whittemore Jr. Scholarship. The $2,500 award is administered through the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Mississippi Nurse’s Foundation.
