Hurricane Preparedness Information

The 2018 hurricane season began on June 1 and will continue through November 30. Students, faculty and staff should prepare now in the event a hurricane threatens The University of Southern Mississippi’s campuses, teaching and research sites.

Dr. H. Quincy Brown, an assistant professor in The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Department of Human Capital Development, recently received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of West Florida College of Education and Professional Studies, where he earned his doctorate. The Moss Point, Miss. native joined the Southern Miss faculty in 2014.

In the last three years, Puerto Rico has experienced massive outbreaks of two newly discovered mosquito-borne diseases, causing devastating effects for Puerto Rican citizens. Mosquito-borne diseases like Zika, for example, can have a wide range of negative effects on pregnancies, causing higher rates of miscarriages and birth defects in developing fetuses.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Association of Office Professionals (AOP) named Rusty Anderson Administrator of the Year and Alfreda Horton Office Professional of the Year for 2017-2018 during its Membership Appreciation event May 30 at the Baptist Student Union on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s online bachelor’s degree in library science has garnered being ranked No. 2 in the nation by Best Colleges. Best Colleges uses statistical data to objectively assess programs based on academic outcomes, affordability, and the breadth and depth of online learning opportunities.

Marketing and public relations professionals at The University of Southern Mississippi have captured more than two dozen awards as part of annual competitions held by the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi (CPRAM) and the Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM).

In the words of English author A.A. Milne, “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” This inspirational message was featured on the third annual Project SEARCH University of Southern Mississippi Class of 2018 graduation invitation.

For the second consecutive year The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has been designated a “Gold Status” Military Friendly School by Victory Media for 2018-2019.  

The Southern Miss Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Department of Athletics and local alumni chapters, has announced the dates for its annual summer parties in Jackson, Biloxi and Hattiesburg. All Southern Miss fans are invited to attend these events to officially kickoff the 2018 Golden Eagle football season. Fans can expect to meet athletes, hear from coaches and take photos with the Southern Miss cheerleaders and Seymour.

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Park campus has recently earned a Coca-Cola/Keep America Beautiful Public Space Recycling Bin Grant to help increase recycling and sustainability efforts on the state’s only beachfront campus.

What began as a simple means to showcase creativity in the Pine Belt region nine years ago has blossomed into the popular, multi-dimensional event known as FestivalSouth®. Set for June 9-23, FestivalSouth® is Mississippi’s only multi-week, multi-genre arts festival, offering both free and ticketed events to local residents and cultural tourists.

The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) in Mississippi will mark its 70th year of presenting Girls State, a popular leadership program for young women entering their senior year in high school, when its holds the event June 3-8 on The University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) Hattiesburg campus.

 

The weeklong program provides delegates active learning experiences focused on the mechanics of federal, state and local government through simulated political campaigns, legislative and judicial processes in the fictitious state of “Magnolia.”

 

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Hattiesburg will join forces with the Gulf Coast center to conduct a series of Business 101 workshops in June, 2018.

The Scripps Howard Foundation has selected Dr. David R. Davies, director of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Mass Communication and Journalism, as one of only six members of its newest class of prestigious Visiting Professors in Social Media. Educators chosen for the program are members of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

The transition from youth to adulthood following the completion of high school can be challenging and confusing for any young adult. Further, this transition may be particularly challenging for young adults with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual or developmental disabilities whose life plans are still unclear.

Graduation. The caps and gowns, the pomp and circumstance, moms and dads beaming with pride, cameras flashing and videos rolling – some things never vary, and perhaps never will, when it comes to watching a loved one take the stage and receive recognition of a job well done.

Christy Arrazattee, director of The University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) Center for Community Engagement, was honored at the 2018 Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning with its Outstanding Practitioner of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement award.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s online child development undergraduate degree program has received a No. 4 national ranking from noted education resource guide BestValueSchools.com.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Master of Science in Counseling Psychology program has earned a 10-year accreditation designation from the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC).

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business has made “dressing for success” a little easier for recent graduates with the presentation of new business suits.

The Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors recently appointed Dr. Mark Dugo and Darryl J. Jefferson as new board members. The appointment is designated for two years, unless both are re-appointed by the foundation’s executive board.

University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Ocean Science and Engineering Director Monty Graham has recently been named to the national Board of Directors for Ocean Exploration Trust, Inc.

For Ethan Taylor, life is about to come full circle. Taylor recently received a $26,000 Annual Academic Excellence Scholarship from The University of Southern Mississippi, where he will be studying sports broadcasting in the fall.

But this won’t be his first time to attend USM. In fact, Taylor is already an alumnus.

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families awarded “Honors Corps” status to 620 military students who demonstrated exceptional academic achievements for the spring 2018 semester.
