The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Civic Chorale will present its holiday performances titled “Oh Light, Everlasting” on Friday, Dec. 11 and Sunday, Dec. 13.

 

The Chorale will perform Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fleming Education Center Auditorium on the Gulf Park campus (730 East Beach Boulevard) in Long Beach. A second performance will be held Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (870 Howard Avenue) in Biloxi.

The Southern Chorale, The University of Southern Mississippi’s top choral ensemble, has been selected by blind panels to perform at two major national conventions, which in turn has prompted an invitation to yet another major performance – a fully-funded trip to Carnegie Hall in New York City.

 

Before making those national appearances, the Chorale will preview some of their works for local patrons on Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Bay Street Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg. The concert is free and open to the public.

Tickets are already in high demand for the three performances: Oct. 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

Concluding a residency at Southern Miss with this concert, David Maslanka will be on hand to hear the premiere of his piece “Hosannas.” The concert is free and the public is invited.

The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra opens its 96th season Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Mannoni Performing Arts Center on the Hattiesburg campus. In true gala opening style, patrons are encouraged to dress in their best fashion for this special opening entitled, “New Acquaintances and Old Friends.”

 

“Similar to glamorous openings at the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Ballet, this is the Pine Belt’s chance to ramp up the glamor and enjoy a first rate musical evening with the incomparable Symphony Orchestra,” said Jay Dean, music director.

The University of Southern Mississippi will present a Faculty Artist Series performance of the Logio Duo on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. in Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi will present a Faculty Artist Series performance of the Logio Duo on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. in Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

Featuring School of Music faculty members Lois Leventhal and Joe Brumbeloe on piano, the program is entitled “Red White and Rhapsody in Blue!” The duo’s virtuosic skills are put to the test in a spectacular performance of all-American, four-hand piano selections.

The duo was the breakout hit during the fourth and fifth seasons of FestivalSouth.

Every year, Hattiesburg’s music lovers anxiously await the announcement of The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra season. Celebrating 96 years, the venerable organization is the state’s oldest orchestra and a leader in cultural offerings for the region.
 

Music Director Jay Dean notes: “Every symphonic concert this season features wind or brass soloists. Some of these performers will be students who come from different parts of the world, including Mississippi, while others are globally renowned celebrity artists."

In a follow-up to last season’s smash hit musical, Rent, The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre will present the exhilarating rock musical Spring Awakening, adapted by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater from the original play by Frank Wedekind.

Performance dates are April 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and April 26 at 2 p.m. A pre-show talk will take place at 6:30 p.m. prior to the April 23 performance. All performances will take place in Tatum Theatre of the Southern Miss Theatre and Dance Building.

With their soulful blues sound, the sibling trio of Homemade Jamz Blues Band will showcase their unique musical talents at the Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, April 4, at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The festival will take place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the campus.

 

The Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival is free and open to the public offering a day of fun and music. In addition to local restaurants and food vendors offering a variety of cuisine, the festival will also feature arts and crafts vendors set up throughout the front lawn of the campus.

Local artists and crafts vendors are invited to be part of the 6th Annual Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, April 4, at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Vendors with the application postmarked on or before March 1 will receive a $40 rate for the 10’ x 10’ space. Applications postmarked March 2 – 14 will be subject to an increased rate of $80 per space. There is a limit of two spaces per vendor.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) will host an evening with award-winning nature photographer Tom Ulrich at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in GCRL’s Caylor Auditorium.

The wildlife photography presentation will feature Ulrich’s work from the past year, with a focus on the spring bird migration in south Texas, hummingbirds and rainforest birds in Ecuador, and Glacier National Park in detail.

In March, members of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Pride of Mississippi Marching Band will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland to participate in the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In order to help defray costs for attendees, the students themselves have organized a 5k run and one mile fun run dubbed the Screamin’ Eagle Dash.

The University of Southern Mississippi will host renowned trombonist Joseph Alessi, for two performances on Sunday, Nov. 23 and Monday, Nov. 24 at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi will host renowned trombonist Joseph Alessi, for two performances on Sunday, Nov. 23 and Monday, Nov. 24 at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The Sunday concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes accompaniment by the Trombones @ Southern Miss. The following day, Alessi will host a master class beginning at 10 a.m. in Marsh Auditorium until noon. The featured performance occurs that night with the Wind Ensemble. All events are free and open to the public.

On Monday, Nov. 17, the Symphonic Winds will perform their second concert of the Fall 2014 season at 8 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Mohamad Shumann. On Thursday, Nov. 20, the Southern Miss Concert Band presents its concert at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Jamie Standland.

When the hit Broadway musical “Mary Poppins” takes flight, she will be supported by some of the best hoofers in the area. The University of Southern Mississippi’s Dixie Darlings will bring their exceptional dance skills to the grand reopening of the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium, Feb. 26 – March 1, 2015.  

 

The Southern Miss School of Music, in partnership with Forrest General Hospital, is pleased to present this exceptional cast and welcome the Dixie Darlings to the Poppins family. Tickets for the production go on sale Tuesday, Nov. 11.

The unique work of five internationally-known artists will be featured on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi as part of an outdoor sculpture exhibition that will run from September 2014 through February 2016.

The unique work of five internationally-known artists will be featured on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi as part of an outdoor sculpture exhibition that will run from September 2014 through February 2016.

The biennial exhibition will also include lectures from the featured artists as well as art walks for anyone wishing to learn more about the sculptures. Installation of the first sculpture, by artist Ray Katz, was completed on Monday, Aug. 25 behind the Liberal Arts Building.
