Dr. Katherine Nugent emphasizes that this is an exciting, transformative time in the history of the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Excitement, expectation and achievement continue to mount for the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi.

As the Spring 2013 semester gets underway we are welcoming the inaugural class of the new Nurse Anesthesia Program. We are particularly proud of the fact that the Southern Miss College of Nursing is the first in Mississippi to offer a degree program in nurse anesthesia.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing faculty and students are making a positive difference in the Hattiesburg community by volunteering at The Fellowship Health Clinic. In their most recent efforts, Dr. Elizabeth Tinnon and USM College of Nursing students were able to assist the clinic in the triage of patients and by working in the lab.

University of Southern Mississippi Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven R. Moser has announced the selection of Kate Howard as the University’s Assistant Vice President and Dean of Admissions, effective June 27, 2016, following a national search. A federal grant awarded to The University of Southern Mississippi in 2014 has already paid significant dividends to former and active-duty military service members seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

A federal grant awarded to The University of Southern Mississippi in 2014 has already paid significant dividends to former and active-duty military service members seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

The three-year Health Resources and Services Administration grant, in excess of $1 million, allows the Southern Miss College of Nursing to offer a specialized program based at the University’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Miss.

The online graduate nursing program at The University of Southern Mississippi has been included among the nation’s Top 100 in a recent ranking by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the online program's first appearance in the national rankings.

The list, which places Southern Miss at No. 60 among colleges and universities with online nursing graduate programs, uses five key factors to determine the rankings. These factors include: student engagement, faculty credentials and training, peer reputation, student services and technology, and admissions selectivity.

After three arduous years of classroom and clinical requirements, 18 students have excelled to become the inaugural graduates of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing.

 

The graduates will receive their doctorate of nursing practice during the University’s 2015 Fall Commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 11 at Reed Green Coliseum on the Hattiesburg campus. Having completed the program, the graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam to become Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA).

The University of Southern Mississippi chapter, Gamma Lambda, held induction for new Sigma Theta Tau International members on Nov. 2, in the Thad Cochran Ballroom on the Hattiesburg Campus. Eighty seven baccalaureate, RN-BSN, and graduate students were inducted.

Auerswald is now in her second semester in The University of Southern Mississippi nursing program, working to complete the rigorous nurse anesthetist program. She hopes to graduate in December.

The College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi has received a $1.6 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support advanced nursing education and practice.

The College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi has received a $1.6 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support advanced nursing education and practice.

Funded through the HRSA Bureau of Health Workforce Advanced Nursing Education program, the three-year award will provide support to educate and train nurse practitioners – at the doctorate level – through academic-practice partnerships.

State Treasurer Lynn Fitch lauded the vision and leadership that helped fuel designs for a new College of Nursing building currently under construction at The University of Southern Mississippi during a visit to the Hattiesburg campus on Thursday, Feb. 19.

State Treasurer Lynn Fitch lauded the vision and leadership that helped fuel designs for a new College of Nursing building currently under construction at The University of Southern Mississippi during a visit to the Hattiesburg campus on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Asbury Hall, with an estimated construction cost of $31 million, is on schedule to be completed by May, 2016. The new building will increase the square footage dedicated to the College of Nursing by 135 percent and allow for an increase in nursing enrollment from the current 550 students to more than 800.

Southern Miss faculty, staff, students and administrators were joined by state dignitaries and University supporters on Wednesday, Sept. 17 for the official groundbreaking of Asbury Hall – future home of the College of Nursing.

The event will begin inside the Martha R. Tatum Theatre of the University’s Theatre and Dance Building, then move to the building site for the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Recent gifts from South Mississippi Home Health Foundation included $400,000 to the Nursing Building Campaign at The University of Southern Mississippi, which helped push the private fundraising initiative above the $6 million mark.

 

The contribution to the USM Foundation in support of the campaign will be used for the creation of an endowment to assist with the maintenance and operations of the new building, which will be called Asbury Hall, and will also result in the naming of the facility’s lecture hall.

The University of Southern Mississippi announced today that a new three-year grant in excess of $1M will allow the university to offer an accelerated program for veterans with training as medics in the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, or as U.S. Navy corpsmen to earn their bachelor of science degree in nursing.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, June 24 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Hattiesburg, followed by interment in Highland Cemetery. A Rosary will be said beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, June 23 at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, followed by visitation from 5:30 – 8 p.m.
