Dr. Katherine Nugent emphasizes that this is an exciting, transformative time in the history of the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Excitement, expectation and achievement continue to mount for the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi.

As the Spring 2013 semester gets underway we are welcoming the inaugural class of the new Nurse Anesthesia Program. We are particularly proud of the fact that the Southern Miss College of Nursing is the first in Mississippi to offer a degree program in nurse anesthesia.

Recent graduates of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Southern Mississippi received a 100 percent pass rate on the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) exam.

 

Recent graduates of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Southern Mississippi received a 100 percent pass rate on the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) exam.

All 30 students who graduated from the USM College of Nursing’s program for 2016 completed the rigorous post-graduate certification requirements. The online program comprises four semesters of academic work with a clinical component that includes than 300 healthcare agencies with which the University has contracted.

South Korean college students So-Hyun Lee and Hye-wan Gwon got their first taste of southern fried catfish, coupled with an introduction to The University of Southern Mississippi’s Nurse Anesthesia Program, during a recent visit to Hattiesburg. By all accounts, they enjoyed each sampling immensely.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Nurse Anesthesia Program welcomed its newest cohort to the Hattiesburg campus for orientation earlier this month. The new class consists of 20 students, forming the program’s fifth group since being established in 2012.

 

 

For the next three years, these students will learn didactic anesthesia principles in the classroom and practice their skills in clinical settings throughout the State of Mississippi.

Dr. Marjorie Geisz-Everson, assistant professor and interim director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in The University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing, has been elected to Distinguished Fellowship of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) in Nursing.

Dr. Marjorie Geisz-Everson, assistant professor and interim director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in The University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing, has been elected to Distinguished Fellowship of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) in Nursing.

Geisz-Everson will be officially inducted during the NAP Annual Meeting & Forum, set for March 17-18 in Philadelphia, Pa. All inductees will receive a prized NAP medallion.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing has been recognized as one of the nation’s best online graduate nursing programs in rankings recently released by U.S. News & World Report. In its 2017 rankings edition, U.S. News places the Southern Miss College of Nursing at No. 57 nationally – the highest spot for any Mississippi college or university.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees reaffirmed the accreditation of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), during its annual meeting in Atlanta, Dec. 3-6, 2016.

 

SACSCOC is the acknowledged accrediting body for degree-granting institutions (public, private for-profit and private not-for-profit) in the southeastern United States and is recognized by the United States Department of Education to conduct accreditation activities. SACSCOC, through a peer review process, conducts a comprehensive review of its nearly 800 member institutions every 10 years.

Faculty and staff in the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi began moving into the spacious confines of their new home – Asbury Hall – on Monday, Nov. 21. The new building is located on the western edge of the Hattiesburg campus.

Classes are scheduled to begin in the new facility for the 2017 spring semester. Groundbreaking on the $31 million, state-of-the-art building was held in September of 2014.

The College of Nursing’s Department of Advanced Practice at The University Southern Mississippi has been awarded a traineeship grant for nearly $350,000 through Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to fund 50 Advanced Practice Registered Nurses for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years.

The College of Nursing’s Department of Advanced Practice at The University Southern Mississippi has been awarded a traineeship grant for nearly $350,000 through Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to fund 50 Advanced Practice Registered Nurses for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years.

The purpose of the traineeship is to support future APRNs who seek to serve Mississippi’s rural and medically-underserved populations while striving to increase the primary-care nurse practitioner workforce in Mississippi.

College of Nursing students at The University of Southern Mississippi completed a service learning project recently in conjunction with a program to assist the homeless population of the Hattiesburg area.

The program, titled “Project Homeless Connect,” was held Oct. 24 at the Salvation Army offices in Hattiesburg. More than 50 nursing students under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Chin-Nu Lin joined forces with Volunteer Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt Homeless Coalition to provide services and information for the homeless.

The ACUE (Association of College and University Educators) Faculty Development Institute at USM launched in September, enabling educators to learn, hone, and practice the teaching strategies shown to foster students’ success in classrooms across the country without compromising rigor.

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program celebrated a 100 percent pass rate from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in the 2015 calendar year.

In 2016, US News & World report ranked the USM nurse practitioner programs in the top 100 online-graduate programs in the nation; USM has the only nurse practitioner programs in the State of Mississippi to receive this ranking.

The College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi is set to graduate its second cohort of Nurse Anesthesia students in December. This current class consists of 19 students who began their doctoral endeavor in the spring of 2014.

The College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi is set to graduate its second cohort of Nurse Anesthesia students in December. This current class consists of 19 students who began their doctoral endeavor in the spring of 2014.

As part of their program requirements, these students must propose and defend doctoral projects that create an anesthesia practice change. The defense of these doctoral projects began in early September and are scheduled to conclude in mid-October.

As the number of students taking online courses continues to grow, The University of Southern Mississippi has initiated steps to meet their academic needs with the establishment of a new Office of Online Learning.

As the number of students taking online courses continues to grow, The University of Southern Mississippi has initiated steps to meet their academic needs with the establishment of a new Office of Online Learning.

In the fall of 2014, approximately 600 students were enrolled in fully online degree programs at Southern Miss. This past semester enrollment eclipsed 1,200, and University officials anticipate the number will likely increase.

As part of an ongoing commitment to student success, The University of Southern Mississippi has realigned key service programs under one broad umbrella to create a comprehensive retention initiative for students from the time they enroll until graduation.

 

The changes include moving the Student Support Services Program (SSSP) under the Office of New Student and Retention Programs (NSRP), which was established last August to increase retention and graduation rates for new and continuing students. The popular Think Center – designed to help students build solution-oriented thinking skills – has also moved under NSRP.

Moser has announced the appointment of Dr. Casey Malone Maugh Funderburk as Associate Provost for the Gulf Park Campus, effective May 10.  Maugh Funderburk’s appointment is pending IHL Board approval.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing faculty and students are making a positive difference in the Hattiesburg community by volunteering at The Fellowship Health Clinic. In their most recent efforts, Dr. Elizabeth Tinnon and USM College of Nursing students were able to assist the clinic in the triage of patients and by working in the lab.
