Human Jukebox and The Pride Join for Halftime Finale Saturday

When two great bands take the field this weekend during the Southern Miss-Southern University game at M. M. Roberts Stadium, it won’t be a battle, but instead a musical convergence as they join forces in an epic halftime finale.

Directors felt it was very important to demonstrate that though both bands are very different with regard to tradition, style and history, they can come together as musicians and work for a common goal. At halftime on Saturday, Sept. 9, SU will perform its show, then The Pride of Mississippi will perform. Immediately thereafter, the two groups will combine in a finale of “America the Beautiful” in a showcase of unity and musical friendship.

When Dr. Colin McKenzie, director of The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band, approached Prof. Nathan Haymer, director of the “Human Jukebox” at SU, he was immediately in favor of such a partnership.

“We live in a time where it is easy to feel divided and where we see division constantly” said McKenzie. “Each day, I see students from different countries, different races, different backgrounds, and different socio-economic situations come together, support each other, build each other up, and work together as to achieve a higher purpose – musical expression.”
