Special guest percussionist and composer Mike Waldrop is set to perform with the University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Jazz Lab Band on March 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Thirsty Hippo in Hattiesburg.

From Eastern Washington University, Mike Waldrop is an amazing performer on drumset as well as on mallet instruments, being equally at home in both classical and jazz settings. Waldrop’s recent release entitled Time Within Itself by the Mike Waldrop Big Band on Origin records was nominated for a Grammy award by NARAS.

“At the helm on drums, Waldrop is the indomitable anchor of the ensemble,” stated Dave Gregg from the Jazz Reader in a review. “[He’s] a master of kinetic energy who plays both authoritatively and with a rare symmetrical beauty.”

Mike Waldrop has had an exciting career that has ranged from rock and jazz to performing in chamber and symphonic settings. He has played and recorded with some of the greatest artists such as Gordon Stout, Neboisa Zivkovic, and Airto. Waldrop has also worked on many recording projects including “Christmas Vacation” (Warner Bros.), national commercial jingles, and two CD’s of original jazz.

The Thirsty Hippo is located on 309 Mcleod St, Hattiesburg, MS, 39401. Admission is free with school ID, $5 for general public.
