Jon Mark Weathers, former district attorney for the Twelfth Judicial  District, will join The University of Southern Mississippi as university counsel beginning Nov. 15, President Martha Saunders announced today.

The University of Southern Mississippi men’s athletics program recently accepted the Halbrook Award for having the highest graduation rate among Mississippi’s public universities during the past academic year. It was the seventh consecutive time for the men’s program to win the award and the eighth time overall.

The Halbrook Award recognizes colleges and universities that maintain and achieve high academic standards for student-athletes, thus encouraging high graduation rates.

A writer is the key suspect in a police investigation about a series of child murders that mirror his short stories in the hit play “The Pillowman,” presented Oct. 21-29 by The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre and Dance.

“The Pillowman” is a 2003 black comedy by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. In 2004, the play received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best New Play.

Dr. John Siegfried, emeritus professor of economics at Vanderbilt University, will be the featured speaker during a seminar on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship (CEEE) at The University of Southern Mississippi.
