Matthew Gallardo is not your typical high school senior. Despite a schedule packed with classes and extracurricular activities, the Sacred Heart High School student participates in volunteer or service activities nearly every week.

Mississippi’s 2015 Teacher of the Year Anna Morris will be the guest speaker for an April 27 program hosted by The University of Southern Mississippi’s Education Major Student Association. The event will be held from 4-6 p.m. in room 102 of Owings-McQuagge Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.

University of Southern Mississippi graduate students Jeremy Johnson and Grover Brown are following in a lengthy line of successful scholarship winners at the University as recipients of 2016 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships.

 

The fellowships cover three years of funding. Students receive a $34,000 stipend every year as well as a $12,000 cost of attendance allowance tenable at any university in the country. NSF Graduate Research Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic merit as well as their potential for broader impact on the greater scientific community and society as a whole.

Perry Robinson of Jackson, Miss., a senior broadcast journalism major at The University of Southern Mississippi, was recently honored by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity with his selection as Junior Vice Polemarch for the Mighty Southwestern Province at the organization’s 80th Southwestern Provincial Meeting. The Kappa Iota Chapter of the USM fraternity was also recipient of its Large Chapter of the Year award for the fourth straight year.

The Institute for Disability Studies on The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus, in conjunction with Junior Civitan, will be co-hosting Amputee Awareness Day on Saturday, April 23.

University of Southern Mississippi Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven R. Moser has announced the selection of Kate Howard as the University’s Assistant Vice President and Dean of Admissions, effective June 27, 2016, following a national search. The appointment is pending IHL Board approval.

Four University of Southern Mississippi Greek Life students were selected recently by their national headquarters to serve as national consultants for the 2016-2017 year. Phoenix Pope of Pi Beta Phi and Sarah Beth Selph of Alpha Delta Pi have been chosen by their respective sororities to serve as traveling consultants for the next school year. Recent alumni Elena Lofton of Delta Gamma and Emily Radcliffe of Phi Mu were selected to serve as second-year consultants for their respective organizations.

University of Southern Mississippi history doctoral student Hayden McDaniel, center, and Stephanie Millet, transcriber/editor with the USM Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage, view a documentary based on oral histories from the center that focus on the U.S. civil rights movement. The center received a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2014 to digitize its civil rights oral histories, and held a reception April 12 at the Hattiesburg African American Military History Museum to celebrate its work on the project.
