The University of Southern Mississippi Speech and Debate team had a successful performance at a recent tournament in Shreveport, La. and looks forward to its next event. The team will host the British National Debate Team Friday, Nov. 10 in the International Center, room 101 at 3:45 p.m. on the Hattiesburg campus. The free event is open to the public, and will feature a debate on artificial intelligence.

From the Wright Brothers’ first flight in 1903 to putting man on the moon in 1969, the 20th Century was a remarkable time for the aerospace field. In the 21st Century, we have even greater opportunities for more incredible progress in flight and space. Through education, research and service, Mississippi Public Universities are at the leading edge of that progress. Seizing these opportunities takes teamwork of many, including government, military, business and academia.

Faculty and student musicians from The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Music will present Mozart’s Gran Partita on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center Auditorium on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The holiday season is a time of giving and receiving but many homeless families are not able to give because they are in need of receiving from their communities to stabilize them in decent housing. Homelessness is a devastating experience for families with children and homeless households need assistance in ending their homelessness.

For the past 17 years, approximately 425 graduate students have benefitted from the prestigious McNair Scholars Program at The University of Southern Mississippi. A recent five-year grant renewal worth $1.16 million ensures that those benefits will keep coming for students who might otherwise miss post-graduate opportunities.

Eleven undergraduates have been chosen for the second class of the Psychology Scholars program at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The program, which begain in 2017, offers high-achieving students - particularly those from diverse backgrounds - the opportunity to serve as peer mentors for new students in the department and other experiences through specialized workshops designed to foster success in graduate education and careers. Applications are accepted in the fall of the junior year.

With Pasco County, Fla., residents being forced to seek safety from dangerously strong storms during hurricane season, the Mike Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter was designed. Sitting on 5.54 acres, this renowned 38,395-square-foot shelter is capable of housing 1,000 occupants and sustaining winds of 190 mph. Its environmental design conserves energy, allowing the shelter to function self-sustaining for up to 72 hours.

Rahul Shankar, a doctoral student in polymer science and engineering, took home the title of Grand Champion in the 4th Annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition held Nov. 1-3 on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus. Shankar, a native of Mumbai, India, also collected a cash prize of $1,000.
