The 2017 Mississippi Coast Area III Special Olympic Summer Games, hosted by the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) at The University of Southern Mississippi, will be held Saturday, June 10, on the University’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The Gulf Coast Library at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach is currently exhibiting illustrations by local artist Tracy Williams.

 

With 15 ports, major shipbuilders, coastal tourism and substantial fisheries, Mississippi’s “blue economy” contributes billions of dollars to the state’s annual revenues. While these maritime industries dominate the state’s economy and support at least 35 percent of its entire workforce through “blue” jobs, the sector is often overlooked as a source of economic development for the state.

Fifteen students began classes earlier this week at The University of Southern Mississippi, where they are expected to be the first class in the nation to earn a certification in Unmanned Maritime Systems (UMS).

A senior research scientist at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL), internationally recognized for his longtime study of Gulf Coast marine life, will serve as the school’s spring 2017 commencement speaker.

Hosted by the Office of Admissions, Showcase 2017 is a free annual event that highlights the many opportunities available at Southern Miss for prospective freshmen and transfer students. The event will take place Tuesday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning at the Fleming Education Center on the Gulf Park campus.
