The Hattiesburg City Council hopes to spread some Eagle Fever throughout the Pine Belt this football season by proclaiming “Go Gold Fridays” in support of The University of Southern Mississippi football team.

 

The City Council presented a special resolution to Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini and Seymour, the university’s mascot, during a meeting on Monday, Aug. 22 at City Hall.

University of Southern Mississippi freshmen and transfer students participated in a popular Hattiesburg campus tradition, Paint the Eagle Walk, on Sunday, Aug. 21 under the east side of M.M. Roberts football stadium.

University of Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders took part in handing out the Galaxy Tab™ 10.1 mobile tablets (UTab) to students on Monday, Aug. 22 at the Trent Lott Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

International exchange students from around the globe met this morning for orientation at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Baptist Student Union as the fall semester gets underway on the Hattiesburg campus. The international students heard from faculty, staff and fellow students about university life, and received valuable information about registration, class schedules and the many academic, cultural and recreational opportunities available to them. Members of the Hattiesburg community were also on hand to welcome them to their new home away from home.

Incoming freshmen and their families turned Century Park residence complex at The University of Southern Mississippi into a whirlwind of activity as the official move-in process got underway Friday, Aug. 19.

 

A few steps from the front gate, new Golden Eagle James Hayden of Kenner, La., brimmed with anticipation as he and family members waited to begin transporting possessions to one of the dorm rooms. Southern Miss faculty, staff and students aided in the moving process.

Plans are moving into high gear for the arrival of artifacts from the collapsed twin towers of the World Trade Center to Hattiesburg and The University of Southern Mississippi.

Dr. William “Monty” Graham has been named chairman of The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Marine Science (DMS). 

 

Graham, a native of Danville, Kentucky, earned his Ph.D. in biology from the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), a master of science in marine sciences from the University of California Santa Cruz and a bachelor of science degree in marine biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
