The Department of Art and Design at The University of Southern Mississippi opened a new exhibit in the Gallery of Art and Design with a reception Oct. 28. "Literary Effigies and Blues Portraits: Woodcuts by Charles Jones" will run through Nov. 12 in the new art gallery space in the George Hurst Building on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association will induct seven of the University’s most dedicated and distinguished alumni into its Hall of Fame on Friday, Nov. 7, as one of the highlights of the 2014 Homecoming celebration.

Students at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach have elected Bethany Noelle Cuevas to represent the Gulf Park Campus at the 2014 Homecoming festivities on both the Gulf Park and Hattiesburg campuses.

Keltoum Rowland, an instructor of French in The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, received the Post Secondary Educator of Excellence award from the Mississippi Foreign Language Association at its conference Oct. 23 in Louisville, Miss.

Noted author and commentator John T. Edge will be the guest speaker as part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s “Food, Campus, Table Series” set for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at the OLLI center on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

The Department of English in the College of Arts and Letters at The University of Southern Mississippi will host the Visiting Writers Series, a lecture series that brings internationally acclaimed authors of fiction and poetry to Southern Miss and the community. The readings are free and open to the public and will be held on the Hattiesburg campus in the Liberal Arts Building, room 108.

The second lecture of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Anthropology and Sociology Colloquium is perfect for Halloween. Dr. Todd Platts will present “How Hollywood Got the Dead to Lay Golden Eggs: The Rise of the Zombie Blockbuster.” Free and open to the public, this event will be held Thursday, Oct. 30 at 12:15 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, room 108.

The National Center for Spectator Sport Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi announces that Yves Duguay is the first international candidate to earn the Certified Sport Security Professional (CSSP) credential.

The University of Southern Mississippi has won the 2014 Donor Challenge, an organ and tissue donation awareness campaign, facilitated by the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA).  This is the second victory for Southern Miss in three years, with the College of Health Ambassadors leading the registration drive and awareness campaign on the Hattiesburg campus.
