Dr. Julie Cwikla, Director of Creativity & Innovation in STEM at The University of Southern Mississippi served as the invited plenary speaker for the National Association of Math Circles (NAMC) meeting at New York University (NYU) on Oct. 29th. Cwikla is a graduate of NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

University of Southern Mississippi doctoral student Ecaterina Stepaniuc walked away with the grand prize in the annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition held earlier this month on the Hattiesburg campus. The competition is coordinated through the USM Graduate School.

Every chiseled rock or oddly-shaped stone could be a potential clue to unearthing a part of the vast pre-European history of Native Americans in Mississippi. Dr. Ed Jackson, anthropology professor at The University of Southern Mississippi, wanted his students to adopt that mindset when they traveled to the Mississippi Delta this past summer to discover more of the state’s untold stories.

Today, Nov. 14, state officials, in conjunction with the Mississippi State Port Authority (MSPA) and The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) School of Ocean Science and Technology, celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Marine Research Center, which is set to be completed in early 2018.

 

Commissioners of the Port Authority authorized advertisement for the $10 million structure, which will serve as the marine operations and research facility for USM’s School of Ocean Science and Technology, as well as enhance and beautify the industrial “front door” of the Port of Gulfport.

The College of Nursing’s Department of Advanced Practice at The University Southern Mississippi has been awarded a traineeship grant for nearly $350,000 through Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to fund 50 Advanced Practice Registered Nurses for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years.

The Mississippi Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon will host its 11th annual Chili Cook-Off Saturday, Nov. 19 from 2:30-6 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park. All proceeds will benefit Extra Table and the USM Eagle’s Nest.
