The University of Southern Mississippi has enrolled the most academically talented freshman class in the institution’s recorded history for the third year in a row. The highest recorded ACT scores and grade point averages for incoming freshmen; record enrollment at the University’s Gulf Park campus and other coastal locations; and an increase in new students show that USM’s ongoing efforts to recruit and retain high-achieving students are proving successful.


For the seventh straight year, the median grade point average for first-time, full-time freshmen at Southern Miss is the highest ever recorded – 3.33, compared to 3.27 in fall 2015. The average ACT score of new freshmen also increased from 22.73 in fall 2015 to 22.94 this year.


University Libraries is celebrating the 75th birthday of Curious George by challenging University of Southern Mississippi faculty, staff, students and the Hattiesburg community to walk 75 miles in eight weeks. “Go George Go!” will begin Sept. 15 and conclude Nov. 12 and is designed to encourage health and wellness while celebrating a children’s literature icon.


Dr. Victoria Bynum, author of The Free State of Jones: Mississippi's Longest Civil Warwill return to The University of Southern Mississippi Tuesday, Sept 13 as speaker for the first fall 2016 University Forum, titled “Free State of Jones: History and Memory.” The event is set for 6:30 p.m. at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The results of an independent economic and social impact study are in, and USM officials have announced the University generates $603.3 million per year in Mississippi.


The College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi is sponsoring an “Experience Business Casually” event designed to help students develop the traits and etiquette necessary for a successful career in business. Considering a college degree program that will lead to immediate employment upon graduation? Then the Medical Laboratory Science program at The University of Southern Mississippi might just be the ticket.


For the past several years, the University’s Medical Laboratory Science program has seen a 100 percent job placement rate for graduates. Program Director and Assistant Professor Dr. Sabrina Bryant notes that a national shortage of medical technologists has helped expand the job market for degree candidates.
